County Representation on the Wildfire Resiliency Code Board

During the 2023 Session, SB23-166 created the Wildfire Resiliency Code Board.  To learn more about the bill, including the make up of the board and it\’s powers, review the bill article in the final 2023 CCI Legislative Report.

The Wildfire Resiliency Code Board is required to have three county representatives:

  • One representing rural communities
    • Appointed by the Minority Leader of the Senate, currently Senator Lundeen
  • One representing urban communities
    • Appointed by the Senate President, currently Senator Fenberg
  • One representing a county that, prior to September 30, 2023, has adopted a code that provides, minimally, for Wildfire Resilient Structures and best practices
    • Appointed by the Executive Director of the Department of Public Safety, currently Stan Hilkey

In addition …

  • Members of the Wildfire Resiliency Code Board must reside or work within an area of the state that is at high risk for wildfire as determined with input from the Colorado State Forest Service
  • Reasonable efforts must be made [by the appointing authorities] to appoint members who reflect the geographic and demographic diversity of the entire state.
  • The term of appointments is three years & individuals may serve a maximum of two terms
  • Appointments to the Code Board are to be made no later than September 30, 2023
